Do you want straight teeth but dread the thought of wearing metal braces? Clear aligners are an excellent option for straightening teeth discreetly, offering a convenient alternative to traditional braces. However, some patients may experience gum irritation or discomfort. At Arcadia Dentistry, we understand comfort is crucial to your experience, so we’ve outlined some helpful steps to manage and alleviate these issues.

What Causes Gum Irritation?

Gum irritation and discomfort from aligners can happen for several reasons. The aligners might have rough edges that rub against your gums or cheeks or might not fit properly, causing extra pressure on the gums. Sometimes, irritation occurs as your mouth gets used to the new trays, especially when you start treatment or switch to a new set of aligners.

6 Ways to Ease Gum Irritation and Discomfort

  1. Check for Rough Edges — Clear aligners sometimes have small, sharp edges that irritate the gums. If you notice any rough spots, gently smooth them using a nail file or emery board. Be careful to only file the edges slightly, as too much filing can change the fit and function of your aligners. If you're unsure, contact your dentist for guidance.
  2. Use Orthodontic Wax — Applying orthodontic wax to the irritating areas can provide a protective barrier between the aligners and your gums.
  3. Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene — Food particles or plaque buildup can exacerbate gum irritation and lead to inflammation. Brush and floss after every meal, and clean your aligners regularly with a non-abrasive cleaner or mild soap.
  4. Rinse with Salt Water — Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can soothe irritated gums and reduce inflammation.
  5. Take Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers — Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help temporarily alleviate the pain.
  6. Contact Us for Help — If irritation or discomfort continues, please reach out to your dentist in Phoenix. We can assess your situation, adjust your aligners, or recommend alternative solutions.
