Do Composite Resin Fillings Fall Out?

Yes, though durable and lasting, composite resin tooth fillings can fall out or break.

Typically, they fall out due to:

  • A Cavity: New tooth decay on the same tooth can lead to dental filling loss.
  • Wear, Tear, and Age: Fillings may break down over time, no matter the type.
  • Poor Bonding: Insufficient bonding to the tooth can lead to filling loss.
  • Bruxism: Teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism) can wear down teeth and restorations.

Why Most Patients Prefer Composite Resin to Amalgam

Composite resin—also called tooth-colored fillings in Phoenix—offers benefits not found in their amalgam counterparts.

First, tooth-colored fillings are color-matched to your enamel. No more silver! Next, they don’t expand or contract due to hot or cold. Tooth-colored fillings mean less healthy tooth removal when treating your cavity. Finally, composite resin does not contain mercury.

The dentist may recommend a crown instead of a filling for deep or severe tooth decay.

Lower Your Cavity Risks with Prevention

While tooth-colored fillings are preferable to amalgam, zero cavities are better still.

We recommend the following to keep your smile healthy and lower your tooth decay risks.

  • Brush your teeth at least twice daily.
  • Floss your teeth at least once daily—best before bed.
  • Cut down on sugary/acidic foods and drinks.
  • Talk to your Phoenix dentist if you suspect bruxism.
  • Wear a mouthguard if you play sports.
  • Talk to us if you notice tooth sensitivity or other changes.

Through your efforts at home and exams and cleanings in our dental office, you can drastically reduce the risks of cavities, gum disease, and oral infections. You can also talk to the hygienist about best practices for home care, including brushing and flossing techniques.
