A dental crown is a commonly used restoration to protect your natural tooth and help maintain the best oral health possible. Although dental crowns usually last for many years with proper care, they can sustain damage or become loose for various reasons.

If this happens, is it possible to remove and reuse a dental crown? Keep reading to learn more.

Protecting Your Teeth with Dental Crowns

A dental crown is used to entirely cover a damaged or weakened tooth. At our dental office, we use dental crowns for the following reasons:

  • To restore broken, cracked, or chipped teeth
  • To restore decayed or worn teeth
  • To support teeth with large fillings
  • To cover stained or discolored teeth
  • To hold dental bridges or dentures in place

Reasons for Removing Dental Crowns

There are certain instances when a dental crown needs to be removed, including these situations:

  • It becomes loose or unstable from decay or damage.
  • There are dental concerns underneath the crown, such as decay.
  • It is damaged or broken from biting down on hard objects or trauma.

Can a Dental Crown Be Reused?

Before your dentist will consider reusing a dental crown, they must consider several factors:

  • Crown condition — If the crown shows no visible wear or damage, it may be possible to reuse it.
  • Tooth condition — Your dentist must evaluate your tooth’s health to determine whether the crown can be reused. If your tooth needs further treatment, they may be unable to reuse the crown.
  • Fit — If the crown fits securely onto your tooth, they may be able to reuse it.
  • Age — The crown’s age may be a determining factor in deciding whether it can be reused. The older the crown, the less likely it can be used again.
